Nomos Centre for Future Warfare
At the Nomos Centre for Future Warfare (NCFW), our fellows engage in innovative research within specialized and emerging areas of warfare. We analyze the changing nature of warfare at the intersection of technology and law, focusing on both state and non-state practices. The NCFW is rooted in jurisprudence, exploring how legal frameworks interact with contemporary realities and everyday warfare practices. We embrace legal pluralism, inviting diverse perspectives on the regulation of warfare and lethal actions 'short of war,' while sharing insights from professionals and leaders in emerging fields to envision the future.
Our goal is to provide thought leadership that addresses the critical challenges of future warfare and emerging technologies. We encourage our fellows to leverage interdisciplinary approaches, applying critical theories and practical insights through primary source socio-legal methods. The NCFW also invites established researchers, experienced scholars, and early career researchers (ECR) from academia or industry to contribute insights through our 'Perspectives' articles.
The Centre is generously supported by the Nomos Foundation in London, United Kingdom.
01

Drones, Targeting and New Emerging Technologies
We have an extensive research programme on drone targeted killings to understand the legality, interconnected nature of unmanned aerial vehicles, multi-state involvement and how it interacts with current standards in jurisprudence, comparing alternative frameworks or codes in/out of war.
02
Artificial Intelligence in the military domain
We are researching the challenges, opportunities and quandaries of artificial intelligence systems across all war-fighting domains. This includes target acquisition, the kill chain, and autonomy.

03
Juridicial Warfare & Alternative Codes in War
We encourage our fellows to critically analyze the role of law in relation to both state and non-state actors, particularly in the context of future warfare strategies. This theme embraces a diverse array of legal perspectives, alternative frameworks, and ethical or religious jurisprudence, all aimed at deepening our understanding, enhancing our competitiveness, and fostering impactful discourse.

04
Digital and Space Warfare
We urge our fellows to thoughtfully examine the impact of law on the evolving landscape of digital and cyber warfare, focusing on the complexities, legal risks, and potential for innovation.
